Microsoft Hyper-V can be enabled on desktops running Windows 8 or 10, or on servers running Windows Server 2008 or 2012.
Prerequisites
- A user account with administrator permissions for the computer
- Enough available memory to run all the virtual machines you plan to run at the same time
- BIOS-level hardware virtualisation support
- Download and unzip the last WebConnect for Hyper-V (Please install 7zip for the unzipping process) You will get a file named wbc-dc.vhdx, We will use this file on the virtual machine creation
Adding the Hyper-V role to your Windows installation
- Right-click on the Start menu.
- Click Search.
- In the search field, enter Turn windows features on or off. Depending on the system, the steps will vary.
- For Windows 8 or 10 systems:
- From the list of features, select Hyper-V.
- Click OK.
- Reboot the system.
- For Windows Server 2008 or 2012 systems:
- From the Add Roles and Features Wizard, click Next.
- Select Role-based or feature-based installation. Click Next.
- Select Select a server from the server pool. Click Next.
- Select Hyper-V.
- Click Add Features.
- Click Next.
- Click Next.
- Click Next.
- For Windows 8 or 10 systems:
Creating a Virtual Network Switch
- Open up Hyper-V Manager and open "Virtual Switch Manager" located under Actions on the right side of the window
- Select External and click on Create Virtual Switch
- Select your network interface (if you are connected over WiFi you should select the WiFi adapter)
- Click Apply and close the window
Creating a virtual machine with Hyper-V Manager
- Open Hyper-V Manager
- Click on New - Virtual Machine
- Click next
- Give a name to the Virtual machine and proceed with next
- Tick "Generation1" and continue with next
- Select a minimum of 2048MB for the memory and click on next.
- On connection select the virtual switch we created in the previous step
- Tick "Use an existing virtual hard disk", and select the file we unzipped before. (It is recommended that you move the image file (wbc-dc.vhdx) to "C:\Users\Public\Documents\Hyper-V\Virtual Hard Disks")
Continue with next
- Check the configuration Summary and if all is OK click on Finish
- Make sure the Virtual Machine is not Running, Right click it and click "Turn Off"
- Right click on the Virtual machine and click Settings
- Navigate to Processor and set a minimum of 2 virtual processors. Apply and close the window
- Right click on the Virtual machine and select Start. The Virtual Machine will start in the background.
- Your WebConnector is ready for setting up
- After waiting 5 minutes to make sure WebConnector had sufficient time to update, connect to the VM opening http://webconnect.local/ on a supported browser. Make sure the PC is in the same network. You will first get this screen if all updates are not yet installed:
Next comes the first setup step
- Enter your subdomain name and key and press Configure. During the configuration you will see the following screen:
- In the next step the device will configure itself, please wait until the browser redirects you to the login. It can take several minutes.
- First log in: Your admin credentials are User: admin Pssword: password
- After this step you will be asked for a new password, please set a new secure password for the admin user (keep in mind your user credentials will be stored on your WebConector and we can not reset them if lost, set up a second admin user for backup in case this happens)
This completes the setup and you can make your individual configurations and work with WebConnect.
